After recently having dinner with my friends, it didn’t take long before the topic of insomnia came up again. It seems that anyone with an odd illness such as mine provide much to talk about. It was no different on that occasion except one of my friends mentioned something which made me think. “Have you seen Insomnia?” he asked.
“You can’t see insomnia” was my reply.
“No. The film” he said. “You should give it a try, you remind me of Al Pacino.”
Now I’m not short, throaty voiced or a Mafia boss so I was intrigued by that comment. So naturally, I got the DVD and watched it.
Al Pacino plays an insomniac detective, sent to Alaska during an Alaskan summer (constant daylight) to investigate the murder of a 17 year old girl. As tiredness and the constant sun take their toll on our hero, he mistakenly shoots his partner. He then has to fool the police investigating the shooting at the same time as working with them to hunt down an evil Robin Williams!
Whilst this film is an addictive crime thriller, it was seeing Pacino’s portrayal of an insomniac that I found alluring. It was nice to see an insomniac shown as someone who is tired and fatigued and affected by the bright constant sun. Now I know what my friend meant when he said I was like Al Pacino. I’m tired and restless and probably a bad shot. Maybe THAT’s why he refuses to go paint balling with me.
